Do-it-Yourself (DIY) built-in wardrobes are a great alternative to having a tradesman deliver and install the product in your home. What makes it so great? It’s a good way to challenge your carpentry/ joinery skills, they are relatively easy to fit and you will be saving a fair amount of labor and delivery costs.
If you’re an avid DIY’er around the house, the level of trade knowledge required to fit a custom-made built-in wardrobe in your home is generally between low to moderate. Once the measurements are correct, the material cutting list generated is cut to fit the space with an exact fit.
For many tradesmen with background knowledge of the industry, the need for somebody else to fit the built-in wardrobe is non-existent. A very standard built-in can be installed within 1 – 4 hours, depending on prior experience.
Given the increase in cost of supply of labour and delivery costs, it would be irrational not to consider DIY when it comes to this stage of the renovation. The saving could range anywhere between 12% – 35% of the cost of the total wardrobe installed.
However, in the economic times of high mortgage repayments and skyrocketing rent, the opportunity cost of taking time off work to ‘DIY around the house’ has greatly increased. it could very well pan out better economically by not doing it yourself. For this reason, one must closely consider whether or not a DIY package really is “worth your time”.
